This was exactly what my dear friend, Ilaria, had in mind when she came to me with a brilliant idea! She wanted me to help her with a unique gift. The person she had in mind for this gift owns this beautiful set of plates:

Ilaria thought it would be a fun idea if I could make her a set of coasters to match! So she sent me the photographs above and I cropped out several 4″ x 4″ square designs. With Ilaria’s consultation, we picked the 8 best images and I put them into production!  Here are the results:

Ilaria's Finished Products

What a fantastic idea! Thank you, Ilaria, for the custom order and I hope your friend enjoys these new creative additions to her dinnerware set!

I like to cook with wine. Sometimes I even use it in the food…

20131120_175306

My expeditions in the kitchen are coming around. You might have figured out by now that my creative talents, (although diverse!) have traditionally never ventured 2 steps past the kitchen foyer. This is mainly thanks to my husband, who owns the chef’s hat in our house, and his uncanny knack to create delicious food for every meal (which I love about him of course!). But going hand in hand with this, is his heightened sense of anxiety every time I attempt to poke around in his domain…

So as you can imagine, my roles for Thanksgiving consist usually of things like the guest coordination and the “ambiance,” (you know- the cleaning, the linens, the centerpieces, the place settings, etc… these I can do!). And these roles are followed closely by the equally important role of actively trying to stay out of my husband’s hair in the kitchen (not so good at this!).

But thankful as I am for being married to such wonderful cook, I decided that for Thanksgiving this year I’m going to contribute something that people can actually chew…

So, I am pleased to introduce my all-time favorite item on the Thanksgiving plate… sweet potatoes! Hands down- favorite! This recipe was given to me for a sweet potato dish that I’ve tasted before and LOVED, but never made myself. And it’s clear that this dish has been catching on over the years… That’s right, move over Marshmallow Yams- Savory Sweet Potato Crumble is here to stay!

Here is the recipe: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/281543700511884/

20131120_205747

This picture is a “casserole for two” version. Knowing me, I knew a practice run was in order, so I made just enough for dinner for two this evening. It came out delicious!! Even my husband was impressed that I didn’t burn it… or burn down the house…

The one thing I am changing about it for the main event is less orange juice (substitute with equal parts cream or milk). SO happy I did a practice run. The great part about this dish also is that I can make the big pieces in advance and save them for baking next week. So I’ll be freezing the potato mixture, and my crumble mixture is ready whenever I am to finish it off. All the less stress for me in the kitchen, the less I’ll be in Tony’s way, and the more fun I’ll be having with my table decor and wine!

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Kitchen Crafting!

If you are a family member of mine, you should know in some way shape or form, all of the people in this collage. If you are a friend of mine, you know at least 2 of these people.  But even if you know just 1 of these people, you have met the product of all of these people. 🙂

How you display your art is just as important as the artwork itself. This is actually not wall art (I composed this on the floor… but I still had a lot of fun doing it!).

Just a display to show some of the different things I am doing with the tile coasters I craft. I am not currently selling them with picture frames, although I think maybe should start…

That’s my husband and I on the bottom right corner (not all that long ago!). Also represented is my nephew at the same event; Paternal Grandmother, recently departed; My sister’s 2 orange kitties; My mother at her college graduation with her Professor dad; and my little brother at his 2nd Birthday!

One degree of separation from any of these individuals = I love you!

xoxo,

Happy Birthday Tony!

Mission complete! I finished it just in time to present to Tony at his Birthday Party, complete with camouflage wrapping paper and tissue. You can see how the stain took to the burned areas, adding warmth and another degree of life.

He loves his gift and all-in-all I’m pretty pleased with it as well  (especially having never done wood burning before). The only thing left to do now is find the perfect spot to hang it!

Here’s a picture of my baby with his present (yes, I made the banner as well).

Thank you all for your love and support throughout this pilot production of my first blog-cast project! I enjoyed documenting my experience and perhaps it will help inspire someone else to take on a new and challenging craft. If wood burning is one you decide to give a shot, I’d be happy to help or answer any questions. Or if there is something different that you would like to see me try, throw it out there! I just might give it a shot.

Till Next Time,

Leonie Marie

More on Shading

01 Friday Nov 2013

Posted by Leonie Marie in Wood Burning

I wanted to talk a little bit more about shading, since this is probably the area that I get the most interest and questions about. I guarantee the advice I’m about to give will help anybody learn how to shade in any medium.  Ready?

2013-11-01 00.56.36

First of all, when it comes to depth perception, the two most important things to focus on (in my opinion) are Perspective and Shading. We’ve already discussed “perspective,” which can essentially be accomplished by making objects bigger the closer they are, and smaller as they get further away. That one’s seems fairly simple enough to do, right?

Mastering “shading,” on the other hand, takes a little more practice. But here are the main points to take away.

  1. Extreme Lights and Extreme Darks. Don’t be afraid to make your shadows extra dark, and your highlights extra light. Remember, shading has nothing to do with color, but with tone. So don’t get caught up with what colors should be darker or lighter. It’s purely about where shadows and highlights exist. This is where working with black and white (or thinking of your project as black and white) can be helpful. You can still transition from light to dark gradually, but until you can achieve the extreme darks and lights, your masterpiece will never truly pop.
  2. Think of lines only as the intersection of where dark and light meet. There are no outlines in real life, so the more you can eliminate the appearance of an outline, the more life-like your piece will appear!

Once you accept these two basic principles of shading, I promise it will become very easy to develop the skill.

I hope you find these tips helpful! I will be working tonight to complete the shading and put the finishing touches on my project. I’ll also be applying a light stain and a coat of Polyurethane to seal it and give it a subtle gloss. I’m looking forward to showing you the finish product after I give it to my hubby tomorrow for his Birthday!
